In 1914, Zhu Qiqian, then the Minister of Interior at the beginning of the Republic of China, planned and presided over the first renovation of Beijing. The No. 7 South Chizi small Building was designed and constructed by the German architect Ross Kegel. The building was in a Western style and the construction method combined Chinese ancient architectural techniques, which was completed in 1916.
In 2019, the Lu Chou Group (the current operator of the Lu Chou Store) took over this building. Adhering to the principle of "restoring the old as it was", they removed the tiles and wallpaper added by the merchants later, restored the original appearance of the building, exposed the original German-style frame structure, and preserved the historical traces. The interior of the Lu Silk store is decorated with Qing Dynasty cement and minimalist decoration, reflecting the integration of history and modernity. It displays historical collections of Lu silk as well as modern Lu silk handicrafts, such as high dragon and phoenix Lu silk quilts, Lu silk morning robes, and Lu silk cultural and creative products, which are both artistic and practical.
The former Lu Silk Store is only open for reservation visits. You may be able to enter temporarily during non-event hours. The store holds cultural exhibitions from time to time, presenting the dual historical context of Lu silk and architecture.
No. 7, Nanchizi Street, Lu Silk Store, with a century-old Western-style building as its carrier, connects the memories of architecture, craftsmanship and the history of the imperial city through the cultural symbol of Lu silk, becoming a hidden cultural landmark around the Forbidden City.
The ultimate of life must be simplicity and tranquility. This is the best description of No. 7, Nanchizi Street. Lu Silk Store, a northern silk store with a history of over six hundred years, is the only silk store featured in the "Along the River During the Qingming Festival". Now, with a thousand-year-old silk weaving civilization and over six hundred years of royal manufacturing history, it quietly awaits you on this bustling and busy Nan Chizi Street... Here, there are countless quiet beauties, as well as encounters across time and space, and perhaps even countless little joys in life are hidden!
